Design is an expression of a business’s mission and should be pervasive throughout all of its various communications needs — from how the business talks about its products and services, how it interacts with its customers, to the experiences it provides when people visit its websites, conferences, stores or offices.

But sadly, good design is sorely lacking in most business experiences. What you do and how you say it makes a difference — good design will make sure you do it well.     Allow me to suggest a 13th. Good design is disarming and en-trusting. People tend not to sweat difficult details and little problems when things look… and feel good.

    Good design has spared me contentions and difficult questions on more than one occasion.

    1. Right you are, Stan! Wish I remembered that one when I wrote this post — it’s amazing how much is forgotten when people love the design! Even if there are certain budget contentions during the development phase, that all suddenly seems to disappear when the final design and impact surpasses expectations.

    Thanks for another great post!

    In point 9, you mention “maximizes efficiencies.” Before color print on demand became available, designers could save clients significant amounts of money by making the most of 2 and 3 color designs.

    Re: the role of planning, often the second and third colors used for logos and border accents could be printed in advance for several upcoming newsletter. This created the premium image of a 4-color publication at great savings.

    1. Thanks for your comments and highlighting this point, Robert — it’s a really important one that often goes unnoticed. Good designers always plan ahead, saving countless thousands of dollars. Other things that come to mind are things like ganging up jobs to print together rather than running them independently of each other, consolidating information to cut down on page counts and streamlining a website or brochure, designing pieces that fit standard envelope sizes vs. custom envelope (saving on both manufacturing and postal costs)… the list goes on. Good design may cost more upfront, but it always saves money in the end.
