Ever the school artist, I first raised eyebrows when I returned from a year in Europe to start first grade, illustrating vast scenics of viking ships and the Black Forest, complete with elk and hunting stands.
In high school, I won national awards for my cartooning and design work — capturing top honors from The Columbia Scholastic Press Association, The American Cancer Society, and Newsday. I also started freelancing at this time, creating regular cartoon features — and was employed as a young designer/illustrator in the media department at a regional VA center. I even painted a 20' wide mural that was displayed in my school for the next 25 years.
Earning a BFA from the School of Design at Washington University in St. Louis, I immersed myself in everything from typography, art direction, and photography to philosophy, literature and art history.
Returning to New York, I landed my first job (on Broadway!) for a marketing firm with a self promotional piece that depicted myself stuck between a bunch of sardines. Don’t ask.
Next I moved to ABC and worked on design projects for Good Morning America, ABC Sports and various television specials. It wasn’t long before I moved to a cutting-edge design agency that helped put ESPN on the map, soon landing their first big broadcasting contracts. We landed design awards.
I soon became an art director for the NFL when sports marketing started to explode. It was a whirlwind — from national advertising to the Super Bowl, staging events and promoting a new global league, creating a breakout, upscale trading card concept — as well as designing for every licensed product imaginable! I even worked with Charles Schulz when Snoopy was Super Bowl mascot. Other highlights were directing photo shoots across the U.S. and tossing the ball with the likes of John Elway, Dan Marino, and Lawrence Taylor (who appreciated my “knuckleball”).
From there, I spent 17 years as Creative Director for McGraw Hill — leading high level, award-winning design, web, branding and advertising projects throughout the corporation for financial, information and media services companies and globally renowned brands such as Standard & Poor’s, BusinessWeek, Architectural Record, J.D. Powers and Associates and McGraw-Hill Education.
I’ve worked with some of the most renowned entertainment companies and biggest corporations in the world — I know how to bring life and energy to any type or size of business with a keen sense of style.
